I always love ordering spicy edamame for the table when I go out for sushi, but sometimes it’s hard to justify the price when it’s so cheap and easy to make at home. This version tastes just like the restaurant kind. Bold, savory, and perfectly spicy, with a glossy sauce that clings to every pod.

It’s one of those dishes that comes together in minutes but tastes like something special, making it an ideal appetizer or snack. Not to mention edamame is such a great source of both protein and fiber!

The sauce combines soy sauce, oyster sauce, gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes), a hint of sugar, and sesame oil for that rich, umami depth with just the right amount of heat. The sugar balances the spice, and the sesame oil adds a warm, nutty aroma that makes the whole kitchen smell amazing. Yum!

I like to serve it warm but you can also keep it in the fridge to pack for lunch! It stores great. Garnishing it with roasted sesame seeds for a little crunch is also so good. It’s the kind of dish that disappears fast at parties or sushi nights, and once you realize how easy it is to make, you might never feel tempted to order it out again.

  • Sesame Oil: Adds a nutty aroma and glossy finish that makes the sauce irresistible.
  • Roasted Sesame Seeds (optional): A final sprinkle for crunch, texture, and a boost of toasty flavor.

Description

Spicy edamame is a quick, flavorful appetizer made with tender soybeans tossed in a savory and slightly smoky sauce that’s just like your favorite sushi restaurant’s version (but better!).


Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 cups edamame (in pods)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon gochugaru (adjust to spice preference)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Roasted sesame seeds (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Boil or steam the edamame according to package instructions, then drain well.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the soy sauce, oyster sauce, gochugaru, sugar, and sesame oil. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the sauce is smooth.
  3. Add the cooked edamame to the bowl and toss until evenly coated in the sauce.
  4. Transfer to a serving bowl and sprinkle with roasted sesame seeds, if using. Serve warm and enjoy!
