8 Reasons I Swear by This Fertilizer in My Garden

By Real Farmer Jeff Back to the Garden Shed

Hey all! Real Farmer Jeff here.

There are a few garden products I simply don’t garden without anymore. And to be clear: this is not a sponsored post. After consistently strong results over the past five years, I wanted to share why this specific brand’s fertilizers have earned a permanent place in my (and thousands of others’) gardening routine. Specifically, Neptune’s Harvest’s marine-based fertilizer (again, not sponsored!).

The right fertilizer doesn’t just feed plants. It improves overall growth, supports soil health, increases stress resilience, and even enhances the quality of the harvest itself.

In this blog post, I’ll share 8 reasons why I swear by Neptune’s Harvest’s fertilizers for my garden, and hopefully convince you to implement it into your gardening routine as well. Let’s get started!

1. Stronger Growth, Higher Yields, and Faster Recovery

This is one of the most immediate and visible benefits I’ve seen. The moment you start using it, plants tend to respond quickly – pushing stronger growth, richer foliage color, and an overall healthier appearance.

In practice, that usually looks like:

  • Faster establishment after planting
  • Stronger vegetative growth
  • More consistent flowering and fruiting
  • Larger, more reliable harvests
  • Faster recovery from transplant shock, heat stress, or pruning

Neptune’s Harvest fertilizer is also widely used in the giant pumpkin growing community, where growers push for maximum plant vigor and fruit size. That kind of performance says a lot about its effectiveness under high demand.

Every year, I attribute much of my gardening success to Neptune’s Harvest. I always notice a big difference in my plants within a week or so of applying their fertilizer.

2. Supports Long-Term Soil Health

Over time, I realized the real value goes beyond plant feeding and into soil building. Neptune’s Harvest supports beneficial microbial activity, improving how the soil functions as a living system. That leads to better nutrient cycling, structure, and healthier root zones.

Healthy soil biology means:

  • Stronger, deeper root systems
  • Better water retention and drainage
  • More resilient plants during drought, heat, and stress

3. Superior Nutrient Profile

Most fertilizers stop at NPK, but this is much more complete. If you don’t know what NPK is, NPK stands for the three primary nutrients used in fertilizers:

N (Nitrogen): Drives leafy green growth and overall plant vigor. It’s what helps plants grow tall and lush.
P (Phosphorus): Supports strong root development, flowering, and fruit production.
K (Potassium): Improves overall plant health, disease resistance, and fruit quality.

You’ll often see fertilizers labeled like 5-1-1, 10-10-10, etc. Those numbers are the NPK ratio, showing the percentage of each nutrient in that order. It shows the main nutrients a fertilizer provides and what it will actually do for your plants. The ratio helps you match fertilizer to what your plants need at different stages of growth, and get better results in the garden!

Here, if you look at the bottom of the fertilizer, you can see the NPK ratio 5 – 3 – 0 (left) and 1 – 0 – 2 (right).

In addition to nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, Neptune’s Harvest’s marine-based fertilizers includes micronutrients, trace minerals, amino acids, enzymes, vitamins, natural growth compounds, and fish-derived oils. The result is plants that feel more balanced and less artificially pushed than synthetic feeding programs.

4. Better NPK Balance

Many fish fertilizers are heavily nitrogen dominant (like 5-1-1 or 6-1-1), which pushes leafy growth but is not ideal for fruiting crops. Neptune’s Harvest is more balanced, supporting flowering and fruit development instead of just foliage. That difference shows up clearly in tomatoes, peppers, fruit trees, and other heavy fruiting crops.

In this photo, you can see the numbers 2 – 6 – 4. This is the NPK ratio of this specific fertilizer.

5. Cold-Processed to Preserve Nutrients

Unlike cooked fish emulsions, Neptune’s Harvest uses a cold process that preserves heat-sensitive nutrients, enzymes, and natural compounds. It also retains fish oils that are often lost in traditional processing, which likely contributes to both performance and its milder smell. It behaves more like a biologically active soil input than a basic fertilizer.

6. Highly Concentrated

This is one of the most practical benefits of Neptune’s Harvest’s fertilizers. Because it is so concentrated, you only need about 1 tablespoon per gallon of water for general use. That makes a single bottle last a long time, even in a large garden, which keeps it surprisingly cost effective over the season.

Here you can see me filling up a 1 gallon bucket with water. I only used about 2 tablespoons of liquid fish fertilizer per gallon of water (≈ 1 oz).

7. Full Line for Complete Feeding

As you’ve seen in the photos above, Neptune’s Harvest is more than just one fertilizer, it’s a full system. Their liquids and dry amendments work together to support both fast plant response and long-term soil health:

  • Fish Hydrolysate (liquid, ~2-4-1): feeds plants and soil biology
  • Seaweed Extract (liquid, 0-0-1): supports stress tolerance, roots, and micronutrient uptake
  • Fish Fertilizer for Tomatoes & Vegetables (liquid, ~2-4-1): designed specifically for heavy-feeding crops like tomatoes, peppers, and leafy greens, supporting steady growth and strong production
  • Rose & Flowering Blend (liquid, ~2-6-4): higher in phosphorus and potassium to promote blooms, fruit set, and overall flowering performance
  • Kelp Meal (dry, 1-0-2): mineral-rich soil builder with natural growth stimulants
  • Crab & Lobster Shell (dry, ~5-3-0 + calcium): adds calcium and supports soil biology and pest resistance

It works well as a layered system depending on whether you want quick plant response or long-term soil improvement.

Here, I am applying Neptune’s Harvest’s kelp fertilizer to my soil.

8. Versatile Across the Garden

One reason I always keep Neptune’s Harvest fertilizer (specifically their liquid fish fertilizer) on hand is how flexible it is. It works in raised beds, in-ground gardens, containers, seedlings, fruit trees, lawns, and even as a foliar spray for quick nutrient uptake during stress. Across all uses, I consistently see stronger growth, better vigor, and improved resilience.

It also shows up in small but noticeable ways:

  • Better flavor in fruits and vegetables
  • More vibrant flowers
  • Improved tolerance to heat, drought, and transplant stress

I couldn’t recommend Neptune’s Harvest more. Be sure to check them out if you are interested. Best of luck in your gardening ventures!
